Chapter 15

Isaac

If we walked straight through the front entrance of the chateau, it’d be suicide. Who else already knew that President Stirk was actually a Mystier other than Narelle and me? What if Narelle had lied about that as a distraction? I shook my head. What purpose would she have to lie? All I knew was that until it was proven, I wouldn’t worry Kyra with gossip.

As we walked under the sunset, painted in violet threats, I lasered my sights around Andersonville. For the next five blocks, armed guards stood at posts on each building’s corner. A tiny red dot flashed on their s-watches, catching my attention. They were all in sync, probably relaying some message or command. Except, at one corner, the guard’s watch didn’t flicker. Squinting, I checked her watch’s time. It still showed yesterday’s date. Broken.

“This way,” I whispered to Kyra and Caspian.

At least Kyra wore boots, making for quick movements in the shadows. Yet, the fancy shoes Caspian had lent me slipped uncomfortably on the pebbles. If anyone was to slow us down, it’d be me. The scrape of gravel skidded lightly underfoot as we hopped from shadow to shadow.

When we rounded the corner, a huge net of electric wires enclosed the chateau like a circus tent. When I stopped, Kyra ran straight into my back.

“Ooof, sorry. What do you see?” she asked.

“We can’t go in there. Too much electricity. Our Magik will be stripped, and we’d be defenseless.”

I didn’t have to use any heightened senses to feel Kyra’s mixed feelings. She glanced between Caspian and me, then her hands rested on her black dress, hovering over her tattoos.

“We planned for this,” Caspian said, “It’s okay. Narelle will turn off all the electricity once we’re inside.”

Kyra’s eyebrows knit tight. “There’s no turning back if we go inside.”

“Stick to the plan.” Caspian leaned in. “Remember, Isaac, go to the spiral staircase in the lobby. A trap door leads to the tunnel where they’re keeping prisoners. Griffin should be down there.”

My heart slammed in protest. None of this would work.

“Ky, I’ll introduce you to the President,” Caspian whispered. “Then you’ll shoot her with this.” He flashed the gun at his hip. “Narelle will turn off the power. We’ll use our Magik to flee. Tada! Everything is fine.” He stared at the crystal necklace draped over Kyra’s front.

He’s hiding something, love.

I know. Let’s just do this quickly.

Are you genuinely going to kill the president?

Of course not. But Caspian needs to believe he’s in charge. Just find Jay. Please.

I will.

“Act as though you belong.” Caspian straightened his shoulders into rigid corners and strutted ahead.

My gaze climbed the flame-like building, wide at the base with a slick, curved exterior that seemed to reach the moon with its pointed tip. The sleek red metal of the chateau reminded me of the flames Kyra controlled at her fingertips. I linked my hand through hers and lifted my chin while ignoring the guard. The closer we marched to the electrical tent, the more our connection faded.
